The Anatomy of the Lower Back
The Lower back is defined as the area between the 12th ribs superiorly and the gluteal folds inferiorly.
This course does not major on anatomy. This is for a few reasons:
- There is very little correlation between altered anatomy and lower back pain or sciatica.
- The clinical guidelines emphasise the importance of not focusing on anatomy with sufferers of lower back pain – emphasising anatomy can raise anxiety which aggravates pain.
- You will have – as a movement professional/teacher – sufficient knowledge of anatomy
- A basic knowledge of anatomy is sufficient to help sufferers – only surgeons need to know exactly where everything is!
As a refresher, the anatomy of this area may be reviewed in the below links, or excellent anatomy courses are run by experienced Yoga instructor Karen Kirkness.
